In 2006, I sent out a nationwide media release insisting that Oprah’s fat-loss methods - which included walking as her primary exercise - were actually making her fat. Even worse, they were making the millions of Americans following her lead fat too.
Fact is, if you want lean, sexy muscle (at any age), walking is not sufficient exercise.
Sure, walking is better than no exercise at all. But it’s not going to help you burn the fat you need to burn in order to feel great and get noticed. Nobody ever walked themselves out of the Fat Cow Hall of Fame. I didn’t… and neither has Oprah.
When it comes to exercise, the old adage holds true: "No pain, no gain." Why? Because you need to force the body to produce a family of fat-burning, beer-belly-melting compounds known as catecholamines. When released, these weapons of fat destruction bind metabolic receptors on the outer membrane of fat cells, causing them to be eradicated via thermogenesis and lypolysis. (That’s just a fancy way to say that the fat cells are being demolished.)
Getting rid of fat with exercise happens only when you attain 60 to 80 percent of your max heart rate. If you’ve forgotten how to do the calculation, here it is: 220 minus your age times .60 equals your maximum target heart rate.

Coca-cola is over 120 years old. Only seven people in the history of the world have known the Coke formula. No matter how large, corporations are great at keeping secrets. Drug giant Eli Lilly is no exception. While working as an organic chemist, I was appalled to learn how they methodically kept natural remedies from the watchful eye of the media, especially when it involved effective cancer fighters like Madagascar periwinkle.
According to folklore, periwinkle is an effective anti-diabetic shrub. Looking closely into the unique medicinal properties, Eli Lilly used state of the art characterization techniques to identify about 70 different active ingredients known as alkaloids. Their studies unfolded an unexpected, yet shocking finding: It was also effective in treating leukemia and a wide variety of other cancers. Remission rates were found to be as high as 50% in short term studies. But long term studies ceased and were replaced with attempts at making more profitable, synthetic copy cats.
To date, only two of the 70 identified, anti-cancer compounds found in Periwinkle have been replicated. Unfortunately, they don’t carry the highly sought after remission rates as their inexpensive, nutritive parents do.
The final story on Madagascar periwinkle according to Big Pharma is that it’s poisonous. But In Madagascar, its extracts have been used for hundreds of years as medicine. If Eli Lilly is half as good as Coke at keeping secrets, this potential, natural cancer cure will probably forever remain under the pharmaceutical drug rug, along with all the other less profitable, natural cures.

But not you. If you learn how to boost one single enzyme in your body, you can defy aging the easy way. Fat always gets a bad rap. Forgetting chemistry 101, cardiologists insist that all fats are bad. With sweeping generalizations, they tell us to avoid red meat due to its fat content. They fail to distinguish between the fat promoting and heart disease inducing trans-fats and the essential, saturated fats in meat.
Forgetting biochemistry, doctors fail to remember that every single cell in the human body is dependent on saturated fat; making up the cell membrane and even the lump in our skull known as the brain.
Forgetting nutrition, they also fail to remember that most vitamins require healthy, saturated fat to be absorbed by the body.
And forgetting physiology, they fail to remember that meat contains the muscle building compound known as creatine. Take home lesson: Doctors are forgetful and grass fed beef should be a major part of your diet. Abstain from trans-fat like your life depends on it.
Nobody is immune to stupid diet myths. And they are here to say, with new ones popping up every day. This is a stark reminder that marketing hype always supersedes diet logic. Let your waistline be your guide. If your fat loss efforts aren’t working, try something new. The beach awaits!

Don’t ever diet. If you let yourself get hungry, your body will go into fat storage mode. Starvation tricks the body into thinking there’s not enough food in the world. Therefore, once you do eat something, it gets stored as unsightly belly fat. Jeans get tight. And everyone knows that carrying more junk in the trunk isn’t right. To prevent the "oh no, please don’t wear a thong" effect, never restrict calories to the point that you become wildly hungry.
This isn’t a ticket to eat whatever, whenever. Anyone who has ever eaten too many burgers understands that caloric overload does in fact fatten you up. The key here is customization. Eat your required amount of calories based on your lifestyle and goals in the form of healthy fat, protein and slow-absorbing carbohydrates - three times per day - nothing more. You can’t cheat calories, no matter how healthy your food or how blessed your metabolism.
